In 2005, after several years hiatus, the GGWSL proudly reinstated its annual tournament. Unfortunately GGWSL player, Anne Wagner, passed away a few months before the tournament. Marc Trimuschat, her husband, asked the League if we could honor her memory by donating the proceeds to organizations in the Bay Area that advance soccer for women and girls. Marc generously matched our donations. Even though Anne’s life was cut short, her spirit, her creativity, her sense of adventure, her drive to push others to achieve their best (and push the edges of their comfort zones), her love of music, her cooking and baking, her humor, her love of soccer and her extended soccer family, and most of all, her big heart for everyone impacted all those who knew or met her.
Anne was born in Pasadena, CA in the summer of 1970. At the age of two, she moved to Chicago where she learned to play soccer. She was often the only girl in an all-boys soccer league, but was always competitive and determined. In high school, she played four years of varsity soccer and was named to the all-state and all-Midwest girls’ soccer team. Anne also played soccer throughout her years at Bates College (Lewiston, ME), where she earned a Bachelors Degree in Russian and Political Science.
After moving to San Francisco in the mid 90’s, Anne joined the Golden Gate Women’s Soccer League and played outside midfield on several teams including Ireland’s 32 and Naomh Padraig. Never the slacker, she also played on several other teams including a women’s indoor league, a co-ed indoor league, and a co-ed outdoor league – holding her own with the men (and many times beating the pants off them with her trademark “chicken wing move”)! She made many friends through the teams she played on and is greatly missed.
The GGWSL is proud and honored to host the annual Anne Wagner Tournament that captures the spirit, camaraderie and joy of women’s soccer that Anne enjoyed so much.
In 2016 the Heart of GGWSL Award was conceived. Big congratulations to our first distinguished recipients of the award!
Barbara Elliott was a pioneer in developing the GGWSL Over 35 league and devoted years of energy and time to help the league grow and thrive! Barbara has also been inducted into the California Soccer Association – North (CSAN) Hall of Fame!
Marc Trimuschat, in 2005, inspired the GGWSL to turn it’s annual soccer tournament into the Annual Anne Wagner Memorial Tournament – named for his late wife.
